Coevolution Of Finite Automata With Errors

چکیده
We use a genetic algorithm to simulate the evolution of error-prone finite automata in the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game. In particular, the automata are subjected to implementation and perception errors. The computational experiments examine whether and how the distribution of outcomes and genotypes of the coevolved automata change with different levels of errors. We find that the complexity of the automata is decreasing in the probability of errors. Furthermore, the prevailing structures tend to exhibit low reciprocal cooperation and low tolerance to defections as the probability of errors increases. In addition, by varying the error level, the study identifies a threshold. Below the threshold, the prevailing structures are closed-loop (history-dependent) and diverse, which impedes any inferential projections on the superiority of a particular automaton. However, at and above the threshold, the prevailing structures converge to the open-loop (historyindependent) automaton Always-Defect (ALLD). Finally, we find that perception errors are more detrimental than implementation errors to the fitness of the automata. These results show that the evolution of cooperative automata is considerably weaker than expected. JEL Classification: C72, C80, C90

Effects of cooperative and competitive coevolution on complexity in a linguistic prediction game
We propose a linguistic prediction game with competitive and cooperative variants, and a model of game players based on finite state automata. We present a complexity metric for these automata, and study the coevolutionary dynamics of complexity growth in a variety of multi-species simulations. We present quantitative results using this complexity metric and analyze the causes of varying rates ...
متن کاملReduction of Computational Complexity in Finite State Automata Explosion of Networked System Diagnosis (RESEARCH NOTE)
This research puts forward rough finite state automata which have been represented by two variants of BDD called ROBDD and ZBDD. The proposed structures have been used in networked system diagnosis and can overcome cominatorial explosion. In implementation the CUDD - Colorado University Decision Diagrams package is used. A mathematical proof for claimed complexity are provided which shows ZBDD ...
متن کاملMultidimensional fuzzy finite tree automata
This paper introduces the notion of multidimensional fuzzy finite tree automata (MFFTA) and investigates its closure properties from the area of automata and language theory. MFFTA are a superclass of fuzzy tree automata whose behavior is generalized to adapt to multidimensional fuzzy sets. An MFFTA recognizes a multidimensional fuzzy tree language which is a regular tree language so that for e...
متن کاملGAME OF COORDINATION FOR BACTERIAL PATTERN FORMATION: A FINITE AUTOMATA MODELLING
In this paper, we use game theory to describe the emergence of self-organization and consequent pattern formation through communicative cooperation in Bacillus subtilis colonies. The emergence of cooperative regime is modelled as an n-player Assurance game, with the bacterial colonies as individual players. The game is played iteratively through cooperative communication, and mediated by exchan...
متن کاملCoevolution of strategies in n-person Prisoner's Dilemma
The evolution of strategies in the iterated n-person Prisoner's Dilemma game is studied in various types of models. By varying the payoff parameters and other characteristics of the models, we investigate some circumstances under which cooperative behaviour evolves, both in a mean-field situation (where all interact with all) and in a spatially extended system on a lattice using a cellular auto...
